Letter From the chairman

l am penning this because I am often asked what it is that Africa Capital does, and how we approach investments.

From human logistics, real estate portfolios, partnering with Starlink and other leading technology players in the AI space, I understand that we do a lot and it sometimes seems scattered. The common element is Africa and bettering people’s lives.

Firstly, we are a for profit firm with a strong leaning toward social impact. We are not an NGO, nor are we out to save the world. We are about using our collective resources to invest in sustainable projects that provide economic upliftment to the underserved.

What’s our why? At Africa Capital we believe that there needs to be a positive effect derived from our actions, however we are in business and for the long-term survival of a private enterprise, we need to be able to generate profits, whilst creating impact.

Impact is created through the provision of rural connectivity rollouts in Africa, supporting the implementation of cutting-edge Al driven tools for increased revenue collection by governments or our early investment in the Chefs Academy of South Africa to name a few. Our stated goal of changing 30 million lives for the better by 2030 becomes an increased reality every day.

Our early investments in real estate, technology platforms, oil and gas, human logistics and healthcare have led to exits or cashflow generation that allow the founders to independently inject capital into projects that we believe in, without the constraints of meeting a set of guidelines that would be the norm if we were using OPM. (Other People’s Money) We are fully internally financed, and not a collective scheme.

Great ideas need support and thus our decision to fund and provide The AFCAP Prize at the London Business School, for a PHD student whose doctoral thesis will have a significant positive impact on Africa. The prizes follow the recognition bestowed onto Africa Capital by the school through case studies, on Kavit Handa’s appointment to the Forever Forward campaign committee.

Progress doesn’t happen by accident. It’s not a matter of circumstance, but of choice. I truly believe that we are making the right choices and trust that you will too.
